To the 4 or 5 people who, according to my site hit counter must be checking my blog each day – thanks. Sorry I haven’t posted in a while.

A lot has happened since last time I posted. But, unfortunately, I haven’t been lugging my camera around for a lot of it. Which sucks because there was some cool stuff. So, starting with the oldest, working towards newest happenings.

1) The kawauchi seiken went to a korean barbecue restaurant after their first meeting to celebrate their freshman. It was really really great. Korean barbecue is where you have a little grill in the middle of the table and you roast your own meat and dip it in this (incredibly good) sauce. It was especially fun at my table because the cover wasn’t over the grill when the lady started it. Big flames shooting from the table.

2) At church I went a whole day speaking almost no English. People noticed, and I didn’t, until they told me that my Japanese had improved so much since I first came. That was really nice to hear.

3) Saw another Tanuki. Eh, this was kind of funny. It was evening again, and I saw it skitter across a parking lot. I got off my bike, and grabbed my camera to chase it and take a picture. It ducked under a fence into a persons yard, then under a wooden walk way. Meanwhile, I waited next to a path, peering over the fence with my camera pointed in the yard hoping to catch another glimpse of the Tanuki. Soon after, a bunch of people suddenly came riding by on their bicycles. Yeah, I know. “Um… what are you doing with that camera?” their eyes all asked.

4) Went bowling with the seiken. This was… kind of embarrassing. I am very large, compared to them (they had to get me a special pair of bowling shoes) and was likely the strongest guy there. But… I scored worse than Charlie Brown, I think, for my first round and improved all the way to, uh… 82 or 86 or something before the night was over. I basically got owned by a bunch of pint sized Japanese kids who weigh less than a buck. One of the guys I bowled with, new guy, a freshman named Makoto, scored like 170 or something. But even the little girls were better than me. Fortunately, they are saints and were really good humored about it. Man… those kids are wonderful. Ah, yeah, Keita saw I didn’t have enough money on me for dinner and bowling, so he lent me 1000yen.

[inserted!] Went to dinner with the sensei and new grads. Ate shredded raw octopus! Yum! Actually, I didn’t like it all that much. But some of the other stuff tasted good.

5) Saw Spiderman 3 with Smile and english student Akira. That movie was incredibly great.

6) Lost my temper on someone’s blog and decided that… I really don’t like the internet, or blogs all that much.

7) Bought tickets to [Lord willing] go to china for two weeks to visit Myron.

8) Trying to finish up a painting

9) Took another corner to fast, on the way to school today. Only, this time it was on cement with chunks of gravel embedded on the top. I though it would give me traction, but, uh, I guess not enough. X( itai

10) Almost [I hope] got my final porous tube model working, which is great because the code is really hard and it has taken me more than a week to get it right.

So, in the near future, looking forward to John coming over. Next week! I should have some pictures to post from that. In the meantime, I’ll keep my eyes open for that Tanuki…

  1. Thanks for posting! I wasn wondering how things were going for you. Raw octopus does sounds gross, I hope you dont get parasites :) when are you going to china?

  2. Yay, you’re alive! I am a truly terrible bowler, so you can be comforted by the thought that I would have done much worse.

I think I’m going to buy a Canon A550 off Amazon today – I’ve checked out the specs on a bunch of similarly-priced cameras, and I think this one will be the best for what I need. Will post some photos for you to see as soon as I get it.

    Too bad about the tanuki!
